Fewer lost days to migraines and headaches

Migraine and chronic headache can quietly shrink your life — cancelled plans, dark rooms, constant worry about the next one. Acupuncture for migraine prevention is among the better-studied uses of acupuncture.

Does this sound familiar?

What we hear from patients

  • “I lose days every month to migraines.”
  • “My headaches start in my neck and shoulders.”
  • “I'm worried about how much medication I'm taking.”
  • “I want to be able to make plans again.”

Concerns we commonly support

  • Episodic and chronic migraine
  • Tension-type headache
  • Cycle-related (menstrual) migraine
  • Neck and jaw tension
  • Sleep and stress triggers

How Dr. Kristina explains it

You'll hear both the Traditional Chinese Medicine view and the familiar medical view, so you understand what we're doing and why.

The TCM view

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the location and character of a headache — temples, forehead, behind the eyes, the back of the head — helps identify the pattern. Triggers like stress, the menstrual cycle, sleep and food are considered part of the picture.

The medical view

Migraine is a neurological disorder. Acupuncture is studied as a preventive treatment — reducing how often attacks occur — and is used alongside, not instead of, care from your physician or neurologist.

Your care at Seven Medicine

How treatment is personalized

How long care usually takes

Preventive studies commonly use a series of treatments over 6–12 weeks. We typically assess using your headache diary after a defined initial course.

  1. 01

    Prevention-focused plan

The goal is reducing frequency and intensity over time, using a regular course of treatment.

  2. 02

    Headache diary

We use your headache log to evaluate whether treatment is helping — the most honest measure we have.

  3. 03

    Trigger and lifestyle work

Sleep regularity, meals, hydration, screen and posture habits, stress — reviewed together and adjusted.

  4. 04

    Neck and shoulder release

Gua sha or cupping may help when muscular tension is part of the pattern.

Research

What the research says

We summarize the highest-quality research we can find — systematic reviews, Cochrane reviews, guidelines and large trials — including results that don't favor acupuncture. You deserve the full picture.

Migraine prevention

A 2016 Cochrane review of 22 trials found acupuncture reduces how often migraines occur, appearing at least similarly effective to preventive medications with fewer side-effect dropouts. Its advantage over sham acupuncture was small.

Patient experiences

In patients’ words

Overall this was a great experience. It was my first time with acupuncture but the benefits were noticed almost immediately! Kristina is very knowledgeable and educated about this practice which makes you feel comfortable with the entire experience. The intake was thorough so she can be person centered for everyone that comes to her. I had neck pain and 1 day later I feel a definite improvement. Will definitely go back!
Patient review
Kristina is amazing—I was treated with acupuncture and fire cupping. She is knowledgeable, professional, and caring. She made sure that I felt comfortable throughout my entire appointment! I will definitely continue going to her for future visits!
Patient review
Kristina is amazing! I was having a terrible time with my pregnancy. After just one visit, I felt so much better. When I saw my husband afterwards, his first words were, “you look different!” I felt different. I suddenly felt empowered. Better yet, all the symptoms that had really been plaguing me for weeks cleared right up! I highly recommend Kristina for all your acupuncture needs!

FAQ

Migraines & headaches questions

Can I come in during a migraine?

Some patients do, but the primary focus is prevention between attacks. If you have a sudden severe 'worst-ever' headache, a headache with fever, weakness, confusion or vision loss, seek emergency care.

Should I stop my migraine medications?

No. Never change medications without your prescribing physician. Acupuncture is used alongside your existing plan.
