When your cycle runs your life, it deserves a closer look

Painful periods, unpredictable timing, heavy flow, PMS that takes over a week of every month — these are common, but that doesn't make them something you simply have to tolerate. We look at your cycle as a meaningful signal about your overall health.

Does this sound familiar?

What we hear from patients

  • “I plan my life around the first two days of my period.”
  • “My cycle feels completely unpredictable.”
  • “The week before my period I don't feel like myself.”
  • “My labs look normal, but I still don't feel normal.”

Concerns we commonly support

  • Painful periods (dysmenorrhea)
  • Irregular or absent cycles
  • Heavy or prolonged bleeding (after medical evaluation)
  • PMS and PMDD-type symptoms
  • Cycle-related headaches and digestive changes
  • Coming off hormonal birth control

How Dr. Kristina explains it

You'll hear both the Traditional Chinese Medicine view and the familiar medical view, so you understand what we're doing and why.

The TCM view

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the menstrual cycle is read in phases, and details like timing, flow, color, clotting, pain quality and how you feel before and after your period all help define a pattern. Treatment is adjusted to where you are in your cycle.

The medical view

Biomedically, period pain is often driven by prostaglandin-mediated uterine contractions, and cycle irregularity can reflect anything from stress and sleep to thyroid conditions or PCOS. Dr. Kristina will ask about your medical workup and encourage evaluation when symptoms warrant it — acupuncture is used alongside, not instead of, that care.

Your care at Seven Medicine

How treatment is personalized

How long care usually takes

Because the cycle is monthly, change is usually assessed over several cycles rather than several days. Many plans are built around roughly three cycles of consistent care, then reassessed — your timeline may differ.

  1. 01

    Cycle-phase timing

Treatment focus shifts across the follicular, ovulatory and luteal phases and around menstruation. Tracking your cycle helps us time visits well.

  2. 02

    Pattern-based plan

Two people with painful periods can have very different patterns. Your plan reflects your specific presentation — not a generic protocol.

  3. 03

    Food and lifestyle

Food therapy, sleep, movement and stress strategies matched to your pattern, reviewed at follow-up visits.

  4. 04

    Herbal medicine (when appropriate)

Chinese herbal formulas may be recommended after a review of your medications.

Research

What the research says

We summarize the highest-quality research we can find — systematic reviews, Cochrane reviews, guidelines and large trials — including results that don't favor acupuncture. You deserve the full picture.

Menstrual pain

A 2016 Cochrane review of 42 trials found lower pain scores with acupuncture than with no treatment or NSAIDs in several studies, but results versus sham were inconsistent and overall quality was low. The reviewers concluded there isn't enough evidence to say whether acupuncture or acupressure work for period pain.

Patient experiences

In patients’ words

Kristina is amazing! I was having a terrible time with my pregnancy. After just one visit, I felt so much better. When I saw my husband afterwards, his first words were, “you look different!” I felt different. I suddenly felt empowered. Better yet, all the symptoms that had really been plaguing me for weeks cleared right up! I highly recommend Kristina for all your acupuncture needs!

Patient review
Overall this was a great experience. It was my first time with acupuncture but the benefits were noticed almost immediately! Kristina is very knowledgeable and educated about this practice which makes you feel comfortable with the entire experience. The intake was thorough so she can be person centered for everyone that comes to her. I had neck pain and 1 day later I feel a definite improvement. Will definitely go back!

FAQ

Menstrual health questions

How many cycles before I notice a difference?

It varies. Some people notice changes in the first cycle; for others it takes longer. We generally evaluate progress over two to three cycles, using your symptom tracking and clinical findings.

Should I see my doctor first?

If you have very heavy bleeding, bleeding between periods, new severe pain, or periods that have stopped, please see your physician for evaluation. Acupuncture can be part of your plan once serious causes have been considered.

Can I do acupuncture while on birth control?

Yes. Many patients receive acupuncture while using hormonal contraception, and some come in when they're transitioning off it.

Do I need to track my cycle?

It helps. Bring whatever you have — an app, notes or your best recollection. Tracking gives both of us better information over time.
